Tips on Packing When Moving
By Susan M Horton

The first thing you need when you move is boxes. You don't have to go to a moving company, or even worse, a UPS store and bay a bundle. Instead, you can call your local grocery store and ask them if they give boxes away. Many of them do and they will be glad to tell you when the best time is to go and pick some up for free. They also usually have small boxes, which are better for carrying. If you fill your belongings into a rather large box, you will have trouble picking it up and could hurt yourself.

Have your whole family pack together. Don't divide everyone up to work by themselves. It can get chaotic, unorganized and frustrating for everyone. Plus each individual person will feel like they aren't getting anything accomplished on their own. Ask everyone to start boxing up belongs together in one room of the house, preferably the kitchen. Give every person specific items to pack. Each room will get done so quickly that everyone will feel like they are really achieving their goal a lot faster.

Since everyone is together, you will also have a much better idea what items are packed. Don't set the boxes aside without writing what is inside before you start packing the next one. Be sure to use a marker to name each box and even particulars on what is inside, such as: "Bathroom #2--shampoo, toiletries, hair dryer." Then you won't mix it up with another box dedicated to another room that might say,"Bathroom #1--shaving cream, cologne, hair combs."

When you are packing, put whatever you will need first in the truck last. That's because the last thing you pack will be closer to the door and will be easily accessible when you arrive at the new house and start pulling boxes back out.
